Thirsk Racecourse is located in north Yorkshire,in the north of England.

The track is oval with a small 10 furlongs circuit,and like most English tracks,left handed.

The round course is flat and a short 3 furlong run to the line off the bend.

Thirsk can host straight races for 5 and 6 furlongs,and this strip is slightly undulating.

Short run in,and slight dip in gradient about 1 furlong from the winning line,can unsettle some galloping types,and course winners should get extra scrutiny when betting at Thirsk.

Thirsk Racecourse 2 biggest races are The Classic Trial (April) and The Thirsk Hunt Cup (May).

All races over 6 furlongs will take in at least one bend,however the bends are level and quite easy for most horses to negotiate at speed

Draw bias - not much effect,but high numbers on firm ground,and low numbers on soft ground are slightly favoured.

No National Hunt racing at Thirsk Racecourse,just flat grass meetings.

They have been racing in this area for 200 years,but Thirsk Racecourse was officially opened in 1923.

The Second World War caused many race meetings to be abandoned,but the 1940 St Leger classic (won by Turkham and ridden by Sir Gordon Richards) was saved and held at Thirsk Racecourse.

Children are welcome at Thirsk and entertainments are laid on for them during the big summer meetings.

Thirsk is a year long business,and they can host your wedding celebrations,conferences,parties etc. throughout the year - ask events manager for details.

Thirsk host about 18 meetings each year during the summer months.

Look out for the themed race meetings at Thirsk - this year there is an Irish Day and a Ladies Day.

"Darrowby " - the village invented by James Herriot in his novels,is based on the cobbled market town of Thirsk.Herriot was also the local vet,and he was on duty during many race days at Thirsk.

Caravaners can enjoy an extended stay in the area as there is a caravan site inside the racing circuit.

 

Fast food and restaurants at Thirsk - but you will almost certainly need to pre book to get a table in the restaurants.

Thirsk was the birthplace of Thomas Lord - the founder of cricket headquarters,Lords Cricket ground.

Why not hire a private box for work colleagues or family ? - they can cater for between 10 and 40 guests (larger parties can hire a marquee,with up to 400 guests )- details from events manager.

Disabled visitors are well looked after at Thirsk,with special parking,toilets,viewing areas etc. - and your carer can get in for free.

Some areas of Thirsk Racecourse have a dress code - no trainers,torn jeans,and fancy dress - check with them before traveling as you may not get in !.

Thirsk Racecourse is ideal for rail travelers - the course is just half a mile from the station.You can comfortably walk there,or catch the free shuttle bus.
