A description of Southwell Racetrack - Gradients,Direction,Trivia, - Southwell Racecourse.

Southwell Racecourse is located 7 miles from Newark,Nottinghamshire,in the east midlands of England.

They race on both all weather (fibresand) and turf at Southwell Racecourse.

Update - Southwell have finally decided to remove fibresand surface and adopt Tapeta - a good move that removes kickback aspect and standardises all weather racetrack surfaces - change due by 2021.

Like most English race tracks they race left handed at Southwell.

....

There are 5 all weather tracks in England, and Southwell is the only course to persevere with the Fibresand surface - this is heavier and slower than other all weather surfaces and horses for courses applies here.

Stamina and fitness is needed to win at Southwell as the Fibresand surface can make it a grueling contest for many horses.

Southwell Racecourse can only host straight races of 5 furlongs, and all longer races must take in one or more bends.

The bends at Southwell are quite tight,so your selection needs to handle surface, and be quite nippy and agile to negotiate the bends.

Draw bias - a definite advantage for horses drawn low over the straight 5 furlong course.

Just 10 furlongs in circumference (flat and N.H.),and is almost perfectly flat.

The National Hunt course, held on grass, has an easy run in of 220 yards to the winning post.

Due to lack of National Hunt meetings, the hurdles and fences are portable - and very easy to jump.

Attractive location and is set in 145 acres of scenic Nottinghamshire countryside.

First official race meeting was held at Southwell Racecourse in 1898.

This is one of the busiest racecourses in U.K.,and hold about 60 meetings every year.

Look out for themed days like, family day, farmers day and ladies day which are very popular with racegoers.

If you are going racing in a group ( Min 7),you can get a special package to make your day at Southwell Racecourse extra special - details from management.

From fish and chips to sit down restaurant meals available to Southwell racegoers - but you may need to book before racing to get a restaurant table.

Make it a full days entertainment by organizing your business meeting,or family get together in the morning, and then enjoying the racing in the afternoon at Southwell - details from events manager.

Facilities are are also available for weddings, parties, conferences etc.on non racing days ( up to 300 guests) - details from events manager.

Enjoy a round of golf before the racing - there are two 9 hole golf courses within the track circuit.

Southwell Racecourse tried jump meetings on the Fibresand surface, but abandoned those plans as the obstacles and surface were criticised by both jockeys and racegoers as dangerous.

I can remember, way back in the 1970's,when Southwell hosted a marathon 12,or 14 race card on the old National Hunt course.I was there, and it never stopped raining from start to finish.I abandoned ship after about the 9th race - soaking wet and potless. It's funny, but I have never had the urge to visit Southwell races again from that day to this. That marathon card was probably the catalyst to introducing the maximum 8 races per meeting, which is enough for any racing fan.

Successful female jockey Hayley Turner was born in the area and had here first race at Southwell.

Children under 18 can get in free at Southwell, with an adult.

Disabled visitors can have a great day out at Southwell, with lifts, ramps and toilets - and if you need a carer to assist you - they get in free.

Southwell Racecourse host just a few National Hunt meetings each year - all on the grass circuit (and also one or two flat meetings also on the grass).

Southwell Racecourse is great for rail travelers,as the station is right by the track on the Nottingham to  Newark line - alight at Rolleston.
