A description of Sandown Park Racetrack - Gradients,Direction,Trivia, - Sandown Park Racecourse.

Sandown Park Racecourse is located at Esher,Surrey,in the south east of England.

Sandown Park is considered London's local track, and is just 15 miles from the centre of London (20 minutes by train).

Most English racetracks are left handed, but they race right handed at Sandown Park.

Both National Hunt and flat meetings are held at Sandown Park, and top class horses appear for both codes of racing.

....

Both the flat and National Hunt courses can be considered as stiff, and horses need to be resolute and brave to win here.

The flat track has a 4 furlong run in,and to stress again, stamina is a major requirement.

The National Hunt course has a run in of about 300 yards from last fence.

Those fences at Sandown Park ( 11 for chasers, and 6 for hurdlers each circuit) are more fearsome than most other tracks,so stamina and good jumping abilities are needed to win.

Draw bias main course - there is not a distinct advantage in the draw at Sandown Park, but high numbers are the best option when the going is soft or heavy.

Draw bias for 5 furlong course - high numbers for large fields in soft going, but you want a low draw near to the rail if the race has few runners.

They can only host straight races of 5 furlongs (separate winning post, and located within the full circuit) at Sandown, all other races will take in bends.

The bends at Sandown Park are easy, and will allow horse to gallop throughout.

Sandown Park host about 26 high grade meetings for both flat and National Hunt throughout the year.

The star meeting for the flat fixtures is the Coral Eclipse Day held in July.

The most popular jumps meeting is The Tingle Creek Chase day held in December.

You can enjoy multi sports at Sandown Park, including golf course, ski slope, karting track as well as pop concerts after racing.

Plenty of bars and eating outlets on course, choose between Champagne Bar or burger van - you may need to reserve table if wanting a sit down meal - details from management.

Sandown Park was opened in 1875 - admission 2/6p (12.5 pence).

Most racetracks in England evolved over many years. Not so Sandown Park,it was purpose built to provide entertainment - and was the first track that charged racegoers for access.

The main attraction on opening weekend was the Grand International Steeple Chase - worth a surprisingly high purse of £2,130 - not bad for 1875,and some all weather tracks in England race for less than that today.

Sandown Park was the Queen Mother's favourite racing venue, and was a regular visitor.

Sandown Park is one of 15 racetracks still owned and run by The Jockey Club.

Going to the races in a group ? - ask for a discount !.At the time of this review,Sandown Park are offering a 20% discount for groups of 10+ (and can cater for 500) - ask events manager for quote for your group of friends or business colleagues.

Sandown Park is a huge complex, and on non racing days can hold your weddings, conferences, exhibitions - big and small groups, and prices can be provided by events manager.

Few courses can match the spectacle of horses flying over the Railway Fences in the back straight, with Tingle Creek's exploits over those fences fondly remembered by racegoers.

Disabled visitors can enjoy a great day out at Sandown Park - they provide, special parking, disabled toilets, viewing platforms, refreshment areas, and lifts - and your carer can get into the course for free.

Rail travel is ideal for Sandown Park ( local roads are very congested on race days ),alight at Esher, and you are virtually there,as the station is right behind the grandstand.
