Ayr Racecourse is located on the west coast of Scotland,close to Ayr.

Ayr racetrack,like most courses in U.K.,is left handed.

The course is oval shaped and about 1.5 miles in length.

Ayr Racecourse hosts both flat and National Hunt fixtures.

Racing has taken place around Ayr for centuries,but the current racecourse was opened in 1907.


A flat track suited for galloping horses,and is ideal for front running tactics.

A long run in at Ayr Racecourse,with open spaces,means fair racing,and all types of horses can win here.

Ayr Racecourse is Scotlands premier course,and host top class flat and National Hunt fixtures.

Races of 5 and 6 furlongs are straight,all races above those distances take in at least one bend.

Draw bias - straight course,you want high draw.........round course there is a slight preference for low draw.

Mild micro climate means meetings are rarely abandoned for frost,even in cold Scottish winters.


The jumps track has a slight downhill approach to straight that can unsettle some horses.

Fences on the Ayr National Hunt Course are not too difficult,but the open ditch in the straight needs to be shown respect as this fence causes problems for horses.

The important Western Meeting was established way back in 1824,and soon offered colossal prize money in those days,of £2,000.

This area is an ancient racing venue,and the first proper meeting was hosted way back in 1771,but horse racing at Ayr was taking place some 200 years prior to that date.


When the new a Ayr course was designed,it was modeled on the Newbury track in Berkshire,England,but Ayr has just a 6 furlong straight,and could not match the full mile at Newbury.

National Hunt racing was introduced here in 1950,and in 1966 the Scottish Grand National was transferred here on the demise of Bogside Racecourse.

Home to Scotland's premier races,including the William Hill Ayr Gold Cup - the most valuable sprint Handicap in Europe.

Disabled visitors have their own viewing platforms and other facilities when enjoying the racing at Ayr.

Members get excellent year round sport with almost 30 fixtures held every year.
